Aker Biomarine

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Aker BioMarine was founded in 2006 as an independent enterprise, building on the deep-sea fishing experience of the Norwegian company the Aker Group. Since its inception, Aker BioMarine has been committed to exploring the biological effects of krill oil nutrients, with science and innovation being central to its strategy. Each year, the company collaborates with academic institutions and leading research organizations to conduct scientific research, aiming to deepen knowledge about the impact of krill supplements on human health and wellness. Aker Biomarine is listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange.

Today,  Aker BioMarine is committed to making a positive impact on human health and nutrition without compromising the health of the planet. The company's operations have control over its entire supply chain, from harvesting krill in Antarctica using its own vessels, to distributing products from Uruguay, and processing the krill into oil products in the United States. Aker Biomarine has two primary segments: 1) The Ingredients segment, which includes offshore krill harvesting, production, logistics, and the onshore manufacturing and sales of krill-based products. 2) The Brands segment, which is focused on consumer goods, with its two main brands being Lang Pharma Nutrition (Lang) and Epion. Lang manufactures and sells private-label vitamins and supplements to U.S. retailers, while Epion is Aker BioMarine's consumer-facing brand.

Looking to the future, in 2025, Aker BioMarine plans to build on the success of its products like FloraMarine – a plant-based DHA omega-3 ingredient that was recently launched – by expanding its market presence and consumer reach. Additionally, Aker Biomarine sees China as a key market for future growth, focusing on broader sales growth across Asian markets as health and wellness have increasingly become top priorities for consumers. Furthermore, the company remains committed to innovation and sustainability, which will continue to guide its efforts in delivering healthier and more sustainable nutritional solutions in the region.

SUSTAINABILITY

In our efforts to achieve our Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) ambitions, we benchmark ourselves internally while embracing transparency and external scrutiny of our progress. We aim to reduce the company’s CO2- footprint. In doing so, Aker BioMarine will systematically implement measures to increase energy efficiency based on available technology. We aim to eliminate product waste and be fully circular in our principal waste streams. We are part of the solution to feed a growing population in a sustainable way and continuously innovate to ensure that we maximize the utilization and value of our resources while minimizing our carbon footprint.

In 2016, Aker BioMarine decided to use the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to guide our strategy and ESG ambitions, with emphasis on four of them:

  • SDG 13: Climate action by taking responsibility and working to reduce our emissions
  • SDG 12: Ensure circularity in our principal waste streams
  • SDG 2: Developing innovative products that play an integral role in sustainable diets and the future food system
  • SDG 3: Contribute to combating lifestyle diseases by contributing health-promoting nutrients.

Traceability is needed to ensure food safety, offer products that are more responsibly produced, and build consumer trust. Thanks to our krill supplier's transparency, we follow our products' entire production life cycle. This provides Aker BioMarine with a high level of quality assurance and ownership. We take pride in telling the story of our krill oil products and where they came from because we know every detail.

At Aker BioMarine, we are proud of our krill supplier's sustainable operations. They are the leading Antarctic krill fishery company recognized for its proprietary Eco-Harvesting technology, which reduces by-catch to a minimum, as well as fully transparent operations and Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification. For six years in a row, the krill fishery in the Antarctic was the only reduction fishery (a fishery producing fish/krill meal or fish/krill oil) worldwide to receive an “A” rating for sustainability from the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP).
