Founded on April 17, 1913, by Tómas Tomasson, Olgerdin began as a brewery in two rented basements in downtown Reykjavík. The first of its vast array of products was Egils Malt Extract, which was followed by a selection of alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages including Egils Appelsín, an Icelandic staple. Although beer production and sale were illegal in Iceland until 1989, Olgerdin sold its beverages to British and American soldiers during World War I and in 1930, included a variety of soft drinks in production with the purchase of soft drink companies Síríus and Kaldá. In 1932, Olgerdin became a public limited company. Following the death of Tomasson in 1978, his two sons Jóhannes and Tómas Agnar took over ownership of the company; however, in 2000, they sold their share to Íslandsbanki and Gilding. In 2008, Olgerdin merged with Danól wholesale, marking a pivotal moment in the company’s history. Finally, on May 9th, 2022, Olgerdin listed on the Main Market of Nasdaq Iceland.
Today, Olgerdin is the largest beverage producer in Iceland. With ownership of many of the most popular brands in Iceland, Olgerdin has an extensive array of products and produces, imports, distributes, and sells its beverages and food throughout Iceland. Olgerdin strives to be the consumer's first choice and places a significant emphasis on sustainability in its operations. With over a century of experience, Olgerdin continues to lead the market and evolve with the needs of its customers.
Looking forward, Olgeroin seeks to expand its product development by investing in production equipment and engaging in acquisitions, transforming its digital infrastructure, increasing communication and education within its staff, and working towards its sustainability goals. The company has also been increasing its healthier options to include drinks with less sugar and alcohol-free beer and gin to accommodate changing customer demands. A major growth aspect of the business is the international marketing efforts on its exciting product collaboration in Denmark and Germany, and the popular Iceland Springs bottled water.
Ölgerðin places great importance on sustainability and works tirelessly to ensure the adoption of sustainability within the company culture.
